5 Reasons We Love Watching: 'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend'

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association — you know, the mysterious group of journalists that hands out the Golden Globes — has made a habit of anointing the year’s most exciting actress in its TV musical or comedy category. This year was no exception. Rachel Bloom, who took home the prize for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, has managed to create a network show that is excruciatingly truthful and uproariously funny — oh, and it's a legit musical. Probably the most diverse show on TV, the series tackles an incredible variety of subjects both dark and light, from mental health and self-loathing to summer camp and party busses. And did we mention it's a musical?! Here are just five of the many reasons to board the crazy train and watch Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Mondays at 8:00 p.m. on The CW.

5. In the grand tradition of Cougar Town, the show (unknowingly?) created an obstacle for itself from the get-go, choosing a slightly cringy title that rubbed much of its target audience the wrong way. But don't be so basic! This series is unabashedly feminist, telling nuanced stories about a real woman struggling to find a little color in a black-and-white world.

4. Two words: White Josh. He's a character on the show, but as the name implies, he's not the alpha Josh. On Crazy, the leading man — and leading Josh — is Filipino-American Josh Chan. The fact that the object of desire is an Asian-American shouldn't be a big deal, but it is. Oh, but don't get it twisted; Vincent Rodriguez III is a CW-approved dreamboat.

3. Craving even more diversity? How about the show's humorous, sensitive, and smart take on bisexuality?

2. The songs are actually good, you guys. And not just good-for-a-TV-show good. Of the two to four (!) songs featured in each episode, at least one will get stuck in your head for days. It helps that they're all written by Broadway-obsessed Bloom, indie-pop musician Jack Dolgen, and Fountains of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger, who serves as the show’s executive music producer.

1. There are SO MANY more reasons to tune in, but the overwhelming one is Bloom. Simply put, she's a national treasure and y'all better be prepared to see her win awards for years to come. And when she does, she just might treat you to a little behind-the-scenes realness, like she did while getting ready for this year's Golden Globes.

This show is fantastic! It is incredibly funny and the characters are all flawed but grow as the show goes on. I also love all the relatable topics they choose to discuss. My favourite songs are "The Sexy Getting Ready Song" and "Heavy Boobs"
