The Most Important Shows on TV: Week of May 14, 2018

Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed — or at least be able to fake it — with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV.

New Girl: S7E8

New Girl
(Series Finale)

Tuesday at 9 pm on FOX

Why: It seems like we were just posting about the final season premiere of New Girl (because we basically just did; 8 episodes blow by, especially when you are doubling up). Unfortunately, the 6 episodes that have aired thus far have been somewhat forgettable (and as I suspected, they offed poor Furguson, although that was one of the better episodes). There has been a lot of focus on Schmidt and Cece's daughter - who is undeniably cute - but still seems to be making up for a lack of other plot ideas. That being said, we can't skip these final two episodes, which will likely be the payoff from not only these preceding 6 episodes (now that Nick and Jess are finally finally engaged), but also from basically the entire series. Oh, and there will be True American.

Prepare to talk about: Whether the series should have stuck with the original ending from last season; what we think the talented cast will do next (Max Greenfield already has a job).

13 Reasons Why: S2E1

13 Reasons Why
(Season Premiere)

Friday at 3 am on Netflix

Why: Few shows were buzzier than the first season of 13 Reasons Why last March. We were captivated. We cried. We debated how suicide should be portrayed on television. Some of us got angry. And then we were somewhat surprised (but also not surprised) that Netflix declared "Their story isn't over.", and would be bringing the series back for a second season. The first season covered all of the show's source material (the original book), so the second season is conceived entirely from scratch. It will be a continuation of the plot from Season 1, still dealing with the aftermath of Hannah's death, as well as an even bigger focus on the sexual assault that occurred at Liberty High School. The core cast is all returning (including Hannah - thank god for flashbacks), as well as quite a few new characters, which should provide plenty of storyline for these next 13 episodes.

Prepare to talk about: Polaroids: this season's cassette tapes?; if there will be any more deaths this season; if Alex survived.

Royal Wedding Live: S1E1

The Royal Wedding Live with Cord and Tish!
(Special)

Saturday at 7:30 am ET on HBO

For whatever reason, Americans love these Royal weddings. We were obsessed with William and Kate in 2011, and we are arguably more obsessed with Harry and Meghan in 2018 - perhaps because Meghan Markle is one of America's own, and also because everyone loves Suits? Now, there have been an ungodly number of specials, tv movies, and the like leading up to this Saturday's ceremony, but the most appropriate way to watch/celebrate this wedding has got to be this HBO special produced by Funny or Die with "broadcast legends Cord Hosenbeck and Tish Cattigan", played by Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon. The duo previously covered the 2018 Rose Parade for Amazon when, hilariously, many people did not realize their coverage was parody. This time, the joke's out, and we're here for it.

Prepare to talk about: What everyone is wearing; family drama; how we're still bummed that Markle (and Patrick J. Adams) have now left Suits - guess it was worth it?

Rachel is the product manager of SideReel, and she definitely binge watched Season 1 of 13 Reasons Why over 2 days.

Yay the finale of New Girl! Boo, a lot more water cooler talk about how 13 Reasons is either overhyped or the best teen show ever.

Never seen 13 Reasons Why...I thought the commercials for it were bland. I think that it us quite overhyped.

None of these shows are remotely important. That "royal' wedding crapfest leads the pack of unimportant garbage.

Not sure about about Cord & Tish, partly because it's about "that wedding" (meh, IMO), and partly because I expect it will go beyond "good-natured comedic ribbing" that all this deserves. I mean, this isn't a contemptible event like a national "____ Parade", with apparently morning-high hosts shamelessly shilling DVDs and whatnot for each corporate property float that paid(?) for its 5 minutes of time to stop the rest of the whole damn parade to get televised.

I never saw "13 Reasons Why". I only wonder why the title is the same. Rehashing the same "event" and reasons? Otherwise maybe it should be called "13 New Reasons Why", "Reasons 14-26 Why", or "Same 13 Reasons, Different Season", etc.? :p

@ArkhamNative LOL! Somehow I find your entire comment hilarious, especially the part about the 13 reasons. Right on point with your commentary though...

13 Reasons Why, well, I've got one reason why not---I just can't get into it.

I'll stand up for 13 Reasons Why. It's an excellent story, wonderfully acted, about topics I dealt with in school that didn't and don't get discussed enough. This season was as good as the first and I hope we get another season.
